About This Tool
How the speed test works
This test runs entirely in your browser by transferring data to and from Cloudflare's global network — one of the fastest and most distributed CDNs in the world. It measures three metrics:
- Ping (latency) — the round-trip time in milliseconds for a request to reach the test server and return. Lower is better. Under 20 ms is excellent; over 100 ms will noticeably affect real-time apps like gaming and video calls.
- Download speed — how fast data travels from the server to your device (Mbps). This affects streaming, browsing, and file downloads.
- Upload speed — how fast data travels from your device to the server (Mbps). This affects video calls, cloud backups, and file sharing. Upload speeds are typically lower than download.
VPN speed impact: A VPN encrypts your traffic and routes it through an additional server, which can reduce speeds by 10–30% on a budget provider, or less than 5% on a fast one. Run this test with and without a VPN to see the real-world difference on your connection.
Tips for accurate results
- Close other tabs and pause downloads before running the test
- Connect via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi for a cleaner baseline reading
- Run the test 2–3 times — network conditions fluctuate throughout the day
- Peak hours (evenings) often show lower speeds than off-peak times due to ISP congestion
